What is Counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling and psychotherapy are both derived from psychoanalysis. As such there is a history of knowledge and technique reaching back over 100 years. Both use the power of speech to change things. It was recognized that speech could be used in this way by the ancient Greeks. What is not said or difficult to say is often a problem. What needs to be said needs a place to say it, a safe non-judgmental and confidential environment with a trained ear to listen and to intervene appropriately. It is more that a sympathetic ear a counsellor/therapist will facilitate personal process enabling you to recognize and understand problem areas with the aim of making choices instead of being powerless.

The work can be short term anything from one session to a year's work, focusing on specific problems or perhaps an endeavour of self-awareness.

Long-term work is open-ended and takes its own course, addressing deep-seated emotional problems with a view to change. Present difficulties are viewed in the light of events in the history of the individual such as childhood experience, it works at deep levels and unconscious expression is acknowledged.

What conditions are appropriate?

Any emotional difficulties can be seen as a symptom which prevents us acting in our own best interest. Anxiety, Difficulty in decision making, pre-occupied with event from the past, panic attacks and depression, are a small example of emotional difficulties. In-spite of these common difficulties, there is in all human beings, a part which strives towards progress and becoming the best that it is possible to be in their personal circumstances. This innate tendency can be called the individuals personal process. For those who seek change and desire to make appropriate choices the work is there to be done.
